To meet the demand of new enzymes for industrial applications c-LEcta has extended its biodiversity platform by Genomic libraries from marine sources.
New and innovative process technologies in industry demand highly advanced enzymes that can cope with harsh reaction conditions while simultaneously offering highest performance. The analysis of natural biodiversity provides a practically unlimited source for identification of such new enzymatic activities as well as bioactive compounds. Especially the marine environment encompasses microorganisms adapted to various habitats with most divers living conditions ranging from shallow beach areas through to deep-sea trenches. This variability of marine biotops and ecological niches and also the much longer period of evolution in the marine environment is therefore reflected in the genetic variability, what render them highly attractive to industrial biotechnology.
Therefore, c-LEcta has extended its biodiversity platform - already comprising pro- and eukaryotic strains, their genomic libraries as well as numerous meta-genomic libraries from various origins like tree canopies, human and animal digestive tracts, industrial plants, soils from mesophilic and thermophilic habitats - by creating genomic libraries out of 2,000 marine microorganisms. These libraries can be directly applied in screening projects and are in particular suitable for enzymes featuring unique properties like being active in the cold or tolerant to salt concentrations.
In total, c-LEcta is capable to tap the natural diversity not only to come up with entirely new enzymes as starting point for enzyme and process developments, but also to screening for new bioactive compounds.
